It is felt through both observation and experience that the way one responds to various situations strikingly changes while visiting the holy lands of Makkah and Madinah for pilgrimage. Reactions to anomalies get drastically cut down, and sensitivity to others’ needs and comfort sees a beautiful rise. Mutual respect, sensitivity and cooperation build an elaborate sense of brotherhood, and it would strike to anyone who knows that’s what the beauty of Islam and the Muslim Ummah are about.
As for being photographed without prior notice, I am quite confident with my guess that almost every of my subjects who found me shooting them indeed showed reactions which were much softer than what I would have expected in other situations.
The expression of this Haji with a remarkable Zabiba, walking out of Masjid al-Haram after Fajr prayers, quite sums up the reactions of most of my conscious subjects. They were sometimes confused or even interrogative like here, sometimes playfully responsive, and mostly filled with innocence, just like here.
